Embracing Courage in Uncertainty

Embracing Courage in Uncertainty

5 Lessons in Embracing Courage from The Greatest Showman Movie

I’ve just returned from the Christmas summer holidays inspired by many of the great movies released at this time. Somehow, there’s nothing like Hollywood’s ability to take a story and weave it into a compelling and insightful learning experience. And one movie that really moved my soul was The Greatest Showman, a musical extravaganza based loosely on the life of P.T. Barnum, the legendary ‘father of show business’.

Championed by Australian ‘triple threat’ singer, actor and dancer, Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman was a project that was 7 years in the making. A musical adventure with a compelling and catchy score with some powerful lessons on embracing courage, resilience and self-acceptance.

No matter whether we’re in the field of business and need to promote ourselves (like P.T. Barnum) or we’re just looking to find our creative dreams and live more fully in our light, COURAGE and SELF-BELIEF are the cornerstones of all great success.

Courage Lesson #1:
At Some Point We’re All Called to Step into the Centre of the Ring

  • What is it that holds most people back from fully standing in their light?
  • What is it that stops us from accepting ourselves and having the courage to shine bright?

Prior to the making of The Greatest Showman movie the producers gathered all the lead singers, musical writers, actors and chorus for a workshop in New York City to pitch their musical concept to the executives of Fox Studios.

In one of these workshop sessions, Tony nominee and 13 year Broadway veteran, Keala Settle was called on to sing the key musical number and anthem for the movie, This is Me. However, having never appeared in a movie production before, and having only heard the song performed by another legendary singer, Keala’s nerves got the best of her. More so, she was even afraid to step out from behind the music stand and sing in front of the chorus and Fox Executives.

In fact it was only when director, Michael Gracey said to her “Keala, you HAVE TO step out from behind the stand, and walk into the centre of the (circus) ring”, that she managed to summon the courage to do so.

Take a look at this inspiring rendition of the song and this liberating workshop performance here:

At some point in our lives we are all called to ‘step beyond boundaries of our comfort zones’ and step fully into the ring. For its often only here in the centre, when we cast away our fears, when we let go of what others may think of us, that we truly get to let our light shine bright.

So where in your life is COURAGE now calling you forth to ‘Step into the Ring’?

Courage Lesson #2:
Embrace the Power of Difference

  • How much of our ordinary lives is spent trying to fit in and conform to other people’s expectations?

P.T Barnum knew that the key to standing-out in the world was being different. Rather than trying to blend in with the status quo. In fact, one of the most pertinent lines in the movie and its trailer is when Jackman, as P.T. Barnum says …

“No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else”

In many ways P.T. Barnum was the Elon Musk and the Steve Jobs of the 1800’s, often challenging the status quo of conventional beliefs and using imagination, creativity and sometimes even sleight of mouth to create new levels of interest and curiosity in his shows.

While modern society conventionally tries to get us all to fit in, be accepted and follow the tribal rules of our families, cultures and education system, its often those that don’t fit in that are becoming the real change agents and transformational leaders of our time.

The key then is: To find the courage to live your own authentic life, in alignment with your highest values and principles, in a way that makes a greater difference to yourself, your family and your world.

Courage Lesson #3:
We Need to Let Go of Past Conditioning and Tribal Patterns that Limit Us

  • What really holds you back from living and creating the life you deserve?
  • What beliefs, patterns and limitations hold back the true creative essence of your soul?
  • Who would you be without the limiting perceptions of your past?

Set in the mid 1800’s The Greatest Showman shows a world in which status differences between the rich and the poor, haves and the have not’s, the beautiful and the oddities has never been more complex and divisive.

While as a society we have moved in leaps and bounds in healing some of this segregation, the reality remains that for many of us we continue to hold onto the residual patterns of scarcity, insufficiency, not being good or worthy enough, or having to conform in society from our ancestors and our past.

Finding COURAGE to live our own lives and define a destiny that tells us that we are free, we are empowered and we are capable of realising our dreams and desires can therefore often be challenging.

It’s not surprising that in many of my one-on-one coaching, healing and guidance sessions with clients that they find themselves coming up against blocks from the past, that are holding them back from being all they can be in this lifetime.

Creating our best lives now, therefore call on us all to not only reach for the guidance of our own higher-selves, but to also find courage to release and free ourselves from the conditioning and patterns of our past (ancestral, DNA, past-life, this life) that will help set us free into the lives we were truly born to live.

Courage Lesson #4:
What if ‘We Rewrite the Stars’?

There’s a great segment within The Greatest Showman where Zac Efron, who plays the role of thtries to theatrical writer Phillip Carlyle, tries to convince trapeze artist Anne Wheeler (played by Zendaya) that it’s ok for her to leave her past behind, and that together they can literally “Rewrite the Stars”.

It’s a really touching and well-choreographed scene that sees literally both of them floating through the air on a trapeze rope, in an endless of dance of separation, then connection and finally separation.

But Zac’s calling to Zendaya is not wasted on us all … for literally in each moment of our lives we are being given the opportunity to “rewrite our own stars”. While each of us are actors in our own life movie, through free will, decision and choice we have the incredible power to reshape and redirect our own lives.

Q. So, what is it that keeps us from “rewriting our own stars” of “recreating our life stories the way we want them to be”?

A. Fear. Limiting beliefs. Not believing its possible. Not feeling we’re worthy of more. Not accepting our own true power and presence. Are just a few of the answers that come to mind.

However, COURAGE call on us to be more. Calls on us to take the pen of life in our hands and rewrite the scripts of our lives for those parts where we feel we are stuck, a victim, powerless, helpless, or defeated.

  • Can you imagine an Oprah Winfrey who did not choose to rewrite her stars as a child?
  • Can you imagine a Barack Obama who did not consider rewriting what might be possible for a coloured man in America?
  • Can you imagine a Nelson Mandela who did not choose to rewrite his stars on being released after 27 years in prison?

Courage Lesson #5:
Focus on Making a Difference – Not on Acceptance

  • Ever noticed that some of the world’s greatest leaders were once considered heretics?

Often in life we can fall into the trap of limiting our results and outcomes by seeking to be accepted by others, rather than truly reaching for what we know in our heart’s and soul’s is possible.

In Australia we even have a term for this, ‘The Tall Poppy Syndrome’. The social paradigm where once somebody becomes successful and begins to ‘stand out from the crowd’ there is the conscious and unconscious desire of those around to ‘cut them down’ and literally bring them down to size.

  • So, how then as visionary creators and leaders can we choose to stand in our own light?
  • How can we learn to embrace and embody our gifts, talents and abilities in ways that bring joy, happiness and fulfilment to many?

P.T. Barnum was well known for his ability to promote and market himself and his shows with BOLDNESS and AUDACITY, two traits that fundamental to the life of the COURAGEOUS LEADER.

Why Embracing Courage in Uncertainty Matters

I believe that Barnum understood that the flowers in the field never try to compare themselves, or limit their growth based on the flowers around them. Instead they simply shine bright and reach to fulfill their innate natural potential. If that means they have the capacity to become a 5ft sunflower in a field of smaller daisies, then so be it. Every flower has a divine potential and purpose to fulfill, a natural path to the complete expression of their authentic presence.

Leaders know that there is always risk involved in ‘stepping into the centre of the ring’, especially when one is at the head of the pack expanding their presence in areas that have not been tackled before.

COURAGE therefore calls on us to listen to the voice of our own soul. To live to our highest potential and not be put-down, shut-down or limited by the voices of the masses who do not understand the power of our own authentic heart. The moment therefore we change our focus to making a difference (and away from our need to be loved and accepted) magic happens. We become alive in the spirited warrior who knows that their time on Earth is limited and that COURAGE is the doorway to manifesting the change that they came here to create.

Entering the Heart of Vulnerability

Entering the Heart of Vulnerability

What Are You Hiding?

Now, I know that might seem like an unexpected way to start an empowering and inspiring blog post but …

On the weekend I found myself doing some healing, hypnotherapy, emotional clearing and counselling with a close friend who has recently been diagnosed with cancer.

As you can imagine our time together was a mix of emotions that ranged from anger, to frustration, sadness, regret, possibility, hope and a fighting spirit. But the one thing that stood out the most to me was how clear, authentic and real our conversation together was.

While our lives may not always be easy, I believe that the greatest gift we each have is the choice to step into our vulnerability, to acknowledge it, to allow it, and to find the courage to move beyond it.

  • In the midst of my friend’s vulnerability there was great power
  • In the midst of my friends vulnerability there was the possibility of peace and healing
  • In the midst of my friend’s vulnerability there was the need to ask for help and support

“Wherever we are in life we all need the support of like-minded friends
who have the capacity to look beyond
our personality – and to love and accept us
as the magnificent souls that we truly are.”

What Do We All Need?

Most of all we need people in our circle of influence that have the
self-awareness and capacity to:

  • Hold us to a higher standard of being
  • Help us acknowledge our true gifts, talents and abilities
  • See us as we truly are – without the need for masks and deception
  • Help us find strength and belief in ourselves – when we simply cannot
  • Love us unconditionally – with all our flaws, warts and inadequacies

“We must have the courage to embrace our greatest fears,
to accept our limitations and imperfections.
For only then will we will find the true path to
healing, self-love and purposefulness.”

We Are All ‘Perfectly Imperfect’

If there’s one great lesson I have learned along this amazing journey called ‘life’ it’s that we’re all imperfectly perfect. While the fear of humiliation and judgement may often keep us from sharing our most intimate challenges – the reality is that we are all in the process of ‘becoming’. None of us have arrived yet, and none of us are any better or worse than the other.

So today I’d like you to look for that one thing about yourself that you’ve been hiding – and all I want you to do is love it. Yes – love it! Love it so much that you literally squeeze the fear out of it. Love it so much that you begin to know at the core of your being that it’s ok for you to just be you.

But don’t just listen to me…

Take a moment today to watch this great TED video on
The Power of Vulnerability by Dr. Brene Brown.

When you’re done watching it – go out and find someone you trust, respect and love and share your vulnerability with them. In doing so you’ll probably find that you’re not alone in this world … and just the act of sharing will help lift a weight of your mind, body, soul and spirit.

And like my friend who is unwell …  you may just find that the cause of your stress and dis-ease has simply been ‘the stuff’ that you have carried with you your entire life – but that you have been too afraid to let go of.

The message for today … Let it go!

And remember …

  • It takes courage to say I don’t know
  • It takes courage to ask for help
  • It takes courage to admit I got it wrong
  • It takes courage to forgive ourselves
  • It takes courage to love ourselves completely (warts and all!)

Living Fully from Your Life Purpose

Living Fully from Your Life Purpose

Welcome to 2015!

Wow … how exciting! Have you realised that we’ve entered a brand new gateway to another year that is so full of possibility, opportunity and potential for helping us live more fully from our highest life and soul purpose?

A New Year … And So Much New Potential

Like many people around the world I had a chance to take some time over the Christmas holiday period to simply rest, replenish and set a new foundation for the year ahead. I often find that the quiet period between Christmas and New Year is perfect time for doing a short ‘life review’, and starting to get clear on intentions, outcomes and pathway forward for the year ahead.

However this year I found myself being really challenged. Because no matter ‘how hard I tried’ to review my personal goals and business plan, I just couldn’t seem to connect with the true passion and purpose that I know helps ‘light my inner-fire’ and fuels me forward towards happiness and joy.

  • Now, I’m not sure if you’ve ever experienced moments like this in your life??
  • Moments where you felt dis-engaged from true purpose?
  • Or where you found parts of yourself in conflict with each other?

Creating a New Life with New Meaning

The good news is you are not alone! Even the most successful, inspired and dynamic people on the planet find themselves in the ‘valleys’ of life, waiting for the next breath of air to lift them back up the mountain of purpose, meaning and fulfillment.

Serendipitously, in the moment of my own ‘valleyness’ (yes that is a word that I just invented!) I came across some notes on the unfolding of personal ‘Entelechy’ that inspired me back to purpose!

defn. Entelechy – Meaning the realisation of potential.
The condition of a thing whose essence is fully realised.
A vital force that directs an organism towards self-fulfilment.

You see … every living organism on the planet has its own innate intelligence and potential. Just as the entelechy of the acorn seed is to grow into a large oak tree, just as the small green caterpillar will one day transform into the magnificent Ulysess Butterfly, you too have a program for great success, happiness and meaningfulness programmed within you. This often hidden, yet innate potential is usually found at the intersection of your own personal sweet spot i.e. what you love to do, your innate talents and gifts, and your soul purpose and desires.

At a deep level of being there is an aspect of your soul and spirit that already knows your highest purpose. Often for most people it is simply our conditioned fears, self-doubts and limiting beliefs that keep us separated from realising our own greatness and purpose.

What Aristotle Knew about Potentiality

Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle was one of the great proponents of Entelechy. He realised that who we are is much more than just our physical body. That among the cells, organs and tissue is a far greater organising power – a subtle but powerful essence that permeates our entire consciousness. When our soul truly connects with this essence we become alive, our inner-flame is fanned into being, our work takes on a higher and more important level of meaning, and we become truly alive again.

So as we start 2015 how can we engage more of our own personal entelechy? How can we align ourselves over the next 12 months towards action and inspiration that is aligned with our highest good? And most importantly, how can you ‘Live More Fully from Your Purpose’?

I’d like to encourage you to take just 5 minutes from your ‘busy-ness’ to contemplate the following questions.

  • What’s my true essence? (i.e. Who are you really? Who are you being guided to become?)
  • What’s my blessing? (i.e. How am I being called to use my gifts/talents to make a difference?)
  • What’s my mission? (i.e. What am I here to do? How am I here to serve and create value?)

Each of these questions will help you to connect more deeply with your own Entelechy – your soul’s higher organising power.

  • Write the answers down.
  • Keep them with you.
  • Remind yourself often of their importance to you.
  • Let them become the guiding star by which you make all your important decisions this year.
  • Let them become the sail by which capture the heart of success, happiness and prosperity and that guide you vessel to a new and more meaningful destination this year.

So, what’s your essence?
What’s the true essence of your soul that seeks to express itself in 2015?

I’d love to know. So make sure to post and share your thoughts with us here online.

Having trouble connecting with your own life purpose, destiny and passion? Wanting to break-free of old emotional baggage, doubts, fears and self-limitations that are holding you back? Or simply want to take your life, focus and results to a new level?

3 Simple Shifts for Living More Fully In This Moment

3 Simple Shifts for Living More Fully In This Moment

A few weeks back I attended a conference in Melbourne which had international author, speaker, pastor, social activist and professor of sociology, Dr. Tony Campolo as their guest speaker.

It was a great event … yet there was one message that Tony shared that continued to stay in my mind days after the event had ended.

You see, Tony a former spiritual advisor to President Bill Clinton was visiting Australia as part of a series of speaking engagements for humanitarian organisations Compassion and World Vision.

Tony CampoloBeing only 78 years young Tony shared some amazing stories of inspiration, hope and possibility via an array of inspiring metaphors and analogies that really provoked my spirit, and challenged me to ask a deeper question …

“Was I ‘really’ living each moment with aliveness?”

At one point he shared the story of how several years ago while delivering a talk on sociology he turned to one of his young students and simply asked “Young man, how many years have you lived?”.

The student somewhat bewildered by the simplicity of the question replied “24 years”. As if seeing the opportunity to delve deeper into the young man’s life experience, Tony replied “No. Not ‘how many’ years have you lived”

But how many moments have you ‘really lived’ … with complete aliveness, with full presence, and an inspired connection to everything around you?

Overcoming Our Addiction to ‘Busyness’

Isn’t it interesting … while all of us may think at some stage think that we are really living, instead we are simply have allowed ourselves to become slaves to busyness, to habit, to the status quo, captives of the comfort zone.

Many chase the material – but miss the wholeness within!

Our truly alive moments are those that ignite our souls, that challenges us to step out and partake of adventure, that leave us feeling like…

“Yes I did contribute something of value and significance to the world today”.

Too often it can be easy to fall into the trap of nurturing and maintaining certainty in our lives, when our higher selves quest for so much more.

When actor Morgan Freeman was asked why his film The Bucket List co-starring Jack Nicholson was so focused on death, he responded by saying that it wasn’t about death, but more so about how to live every precious moment of life fully.

The 3 Simple Shifts

We need to constantly remind ourselves that each and every day above ground is a ‘gift’, the opportunity to do something new, the chance to live more fully, and to love more openly.

So here are 3 simple ‘shifts’ that can help you engage, embrace and accept more of the ‘life’, ‘fulfilment’ and ‘aliveness’ in your life:

1. Engage Uncertainty

In life it can be too easy to run away from the situations which challenge us to step into uncertainty. For uncertainty has the potential to bring up fears, doubts and shortcomings.

Yet it is in the face of courage, when we step our of the comfort zones, and into the growth and our adventure zones in our lives that we are most free. Free to follow our dreams, to be all we can be, to live fully in our greatest light.

Engaging Uncertainty is therefore an oxymoron, for it holds within it the seed of possibility and freedom for our lives. Take one step towards ‘engaging uncertainty’ in your life each day, and you will begin to see the true courage within you rise.

Question to Consider: How can I powerfully engage uncertainty in my life today?

Affirmation for Success:  Whatever happens – I’ll handle it!

2. Say Yes to Opportunity

Have you noticed how easy it is to say ‘no’ to the opportunities in our lives?

When we are in harmony with our own hearts, souls and spirits. When we are embracing the highest aspects of our being on purpose, then opportunities start to present themselves that are in harmony and synchronicity with our highest intentions.

The key is to first get clear, of the emotional and past baggage that often keeps us captive and separated from our highest self. This is the key reason I created the Soul Path Intelligence program – to helps people simply learn to get themselves out of the way, to find their unique way back home to themselves!

Once you are clear – your job then becomes one of assessing the opportunities that present to you each day, and following those that resonate with your heart, that bring you expansion and fulfilment. But to do this you must be willing to say ‘Yes’ to the opportunities when they present!

Question to Consider: How can I embrace the fullness of my life today? Where do I need to say ‘Yes’?

Affirmation for Success:  I say ‘yes’ to life – and all of life says ‘yes’ to me!

3. Live One Day Spontaneously

Are you attached to your daily routine? If so, don’t worry – you’re not alone! While your routine keeps you feeling safe and comfortable, it also is one of the greatest barriers to experiencing aliveness.

I remember going on holiday to Thailand several years ago, and it literally took me 3-4 days before I could fully unwind, settle into the resort/beach clothes and not think about thing I had to do. So wouldn’t it be good to have a spontaneous holiday/vacation in your own life once a week, once a month?

So take the challenge … pick one day this month where you can just live spontaneously – no plans, no watch, no agendas, no routine – just doing whatever you feel like in each moment – spontaneously. If you need to … put on the beach clothes – take yourself out of your familiar environment and allow your soul, your inner-child the freedom to play, explore and just be.

I know you will find it liberating!

Question to Consider: If there were no plans, if there was no routine or demands on my time… how would I love to live fully today?

Affirmation for Success: When I am present – I am free to experience the beauty of this moment

Enjoy!

The 21 Day Consciousness Cleanse

  • Are you still holding onto your past?
  • Do you find it hard to live in the present and to create the future you have always dreamed of?

Then Maybe What You Need is a ‘Detox’ of the Soul …

I have just come across this great book by speaker, movie maker and writer Debbie Ford, who is also the best-selling author of The Dark Side of the Light Chasers and The Shadow Effect with Deepak Chopra.

What’s great about this book is that it provides simple but effective daily practices to help you activate some of the ‘key agents of change’ to help you navigate through releasing emotional and spiritual toxicity from your past, challenging you to become grounded in the present, and inspiring you to activate your greatest gifts to create your ‘ideal’ future.

7 Key Lessons and Insights from Within …

Insight #1: You must understand that divine consciousness (your soul’s journey) and human consciousness (your ego’s path) coexist and are operating within you all the time.

Insight #2: You are designed to reinvent and recreate yourself, over and over again for the evolution of your own soul.

Insight #3: There is a ‘golden essence’ within you that has been covered within ‘human clay’ of past upsets, hurts and disappointments. While this clay provides you protection and safety, it keeps you separated from your divine essence. Therefore the job of every human being is to break through the clay and reveal their true ‘golden essence’ to the world.

Insight #4: You must recognise that there are thousands of life-draining beliefs and if you attach to any of these negative beliefs, and call them your own, they become your limitations. That’s when you literally “Ease God Out” (EGO).

Insight #5: All real change requires risk. You must take risks everyday of your life. You must get up each morning and ask not “What can I do that is the same today?”, but in fact the complete opposite: What can I do that is different?

Insight #6: Your soul’s mission is always to serve you in the grandest way it can and to support you in growing and evolving in new ways. Therefore, are you going to follow the path that you’ve always known? Or are you going to roll the dice and bet all your resources on a power greater than yourself, a source that literally has the power to change everything in your life?

Insight #7: The world is waiting for you. To follow the call to new, uncharted lands, you must first be willing to trust the possibilities that exist within you. The opportunities and possibilities are endless when you honour your soul, value yourself first, and commit to follow the inspired guidance of your heart in each moment.
